What Is A Dry Cooler?

Dry coolers work by convection and conduction to dissipate heat from the process fluid into the airflow created by the fan mounted on it. With proper selection of tube materials, we can use dry coolers to efficiently cool or condense process water, chemicals or any heat transfer fluid, even if it is corrosive or contaminated with particles. Dry coolers are closed loop systems that eliminate any type of moisture loss, thereby eliminating the constant need for make-up water. As a closed loop, water treatment costs are also negligible compared to traditional evaporative cooling towers.

A dry cooler is a cooling device that uses air to regulate process temperature. The cooling done by a dry cooling system is based on the principles of sensible heat rejection. A typical unit requires a cooling medium channeled from an associated process that enters a dry cooler and exchanges accumulated heat with the air circulating within.

Dry coolers have fans that pull air from the cooler’s exterior to sustain the heat exchange process. A suitable temperature difference between the cooling medium and the air within the dry cooling system must be maintained to ensure efficient process cooling. A minimum difference of 5°C is usually enough.

Dry coolers are often used in applications where water is scarce or where the use of water is prohibited due to environmental regulations. They are also commonly used in industrial processes, such as power generation and chemical processing, where cooling is required to maintain optimal operating conditions.

Sprinkler system: 

Intermittent atomized watersprayed over the intake airstream provides an adiabaticcooling effect, lowering the airtemperature to near wet-bulbtemperatures, which helps tosave significant energy.
 

Evaporative pre-cooling: 

The incoming airlow passes througha pad (tap water) moistened bycellulose or other materials such asaluminum foil. The water can becollected and reused. The evaporativecooling unit saves a lot of energy onthe fan and increases heat dissipation.
